How to Create a Chat Flow That Starts Conversations

⚡ In short

  • Flows are automatic messages that pop up in the chat at the right moment.
  • Start from a ready-made template under Flows → Ready-made Flows, or press New Flow.
  • Choose the moment (time on page, exit intent and more), write a short message and switch it on.
  • Add conditions such as page, country or traffic source to target the right visitors.

Most visitors never open a chat on their own. A Flow says hello first, at a moment you choose, which turns quiet visitors into conversations and leads. Read more about what they can do on the Flows page.

Step 1: Pick a template or start from scratch

Open Flows in the top bar. Under Ready-made Flows you will find templates grouped by goal: Sell more, Get leads and Help customers. Press Use this on one, or press New Flow and Start from scratch.

Good first templates:

  • Discount for new visitors, for online stores.
  • Stop visitors from leaving, which uses exit intent.
  • Newsletter sign-up, which collects emails.

Step 2: Choose when it shows

Under When to show it, pick the moment the message pops up, for example after a number of seconds on a page, or when the mouse moves to leave the page. Each visitor sees a Flow only once, and never while they are already chatting.

Step 3: Write the message

Keep it to one or two short lines that match the page. “Need help choosing a size?” works better on a product page than a general “Hi there”. If the Flow should collect leads, switch on Ask for the visitor’s email. Emails you collect appear under Visitors → Subscribers.

Step 4: Add conditions (optional)

Under Only show it when… add conditions so the Flow reaches the right people, for example visitors from Google on your pricing page, or visitors from India only. All conditions must match. Countries use two-letter codes separated by commas (IN, US, AE).

Step 5: Add a follow-up (optional)

If the visitor doesn’t open the chat, a Follow-up message sends a second, shorter nudge a little later, such as “Still there? I’m happy to help 🙂”.

Step 6: Save, switch on and test

Press Save Flow and make sure it says On. Open the test page in a private window to see it as a first-time visitor would.

Bonus: the chat rescuer

At the bottom of Flows you will find the Chat rescuer. When a visitor writes and nobody answers in time, it sends an automatic reply and offers the email form, so they don’t leave empty-handed.

FAQ

How many Flows can I run?

As many as you like. Each visitor sees a Flow only once, so they won’t be flooded with messages.

Can a Flow show only on one page?

Yes. Add a page condition under “Only show it when…”.

Where do the emails from a Flow go?

To Visitors → Subscribers, and to your webhook if you connected one.

Why don’t I see my Flow when I test?

You have probably seen it already. Open your site in a private window to test again.
